On the grounds of the University of Ghana at Legon, the botanical garden is a peaceful green space with walking paths and shaded lawns, and a canopy walkway for a view from the treetops. It is a good choice for families and anyone who wants some fresh air without travelling far.
Aburi Botanical Gardens and the Akuapem hills
Up in the Akuapem hills, the town of Aburi is known for its historic botanical gardens, cooler air and wide views back towards Accra. Combine the gardens with a stop at the craft stalls in the area, where wood carvers sell their work.
Shai Hills Resource Reserve
For wildlife and wide-open landscapes, the Shai Hills Resource Reserve is a protected area of savannah and rocky hills where visitors can see baboons and other wildlife and explore caves with a guide. Go early in the day, when it is cooler, and bring water.
Dodowa town
At the northern end of Dodowa Road, the town of Dodowa sits at the foot of the hills. It is a lively local market town and the gateway to the Akuapem ridge.
Shopping and dining in Accra
Large malls such as Accra Mall at Tetteh Quarshie offer shopping, cinemas and restaurants. Closer to home, Adenta and Madina have busy markets and shops for everyday needs.
The coast
If you would like time by the sea, Accra’s beaches, such as Labadi, are a popular half-day outing, especially at weekends when there is music and food along the sand.
